Injury forced Andy Coakley, a gifted right-handed
pitcher, to retire from professional baseball by age 29. But rather than fade into obscurity, like most major leaguers
with abbreviated careers, Coakley's storied successes were just beginning. As a coach he would enjoy a short, successful stint
at Williams College before joining the ranks of Columbia University in 1914. In 37 seasons as skipper, he would lead Columbia
to three league titles and become perhaps the school's most famous baseball coach, responsible for developing a slew
of talents, including Lou Gehrig.
